The Algarvian Serra is a low populated and nature-rich region, dominated by hilly to midmountains, covered by the white flowering Crimson-Spot Rockrose and Cork Oak trees, the latter being the main basis for employment in the region. Forest birds here include Crested Tit, Sharp’s Green Woodpecker, Common Redstart and Golden Oriole. Short-toed Eagle and Bonelli’s Eagle are breeding in the area. Melodious Warbler, Iberian Chiffchaff, Subalpine Warbler and Rock Bunting also do occur. The limestone belt of the Barrocal offers a spectacular diversity of wild flowers, including various Orchid-species from late winter onwards, as well as butterflies and other wildlife.
