From 4 till 8 of October, more than 1000 people meet at the 9th Festival of Birdwatching in Sagres to enjoy the outdoor activities and observe the bird migration season.
We were also part of field activities on the hand of Thijs Valkenburg from RIAS and Guillaume Réthoré from A Rocha Life. We were accompanying the guided groups to several points of observation, from Cabo de São Vicente where we observed mainly the seabirds, Monte Cabranosa - the best place to observe the birds of pray, and Ponta de Atalaia where we observed mostly the Passeriformes.
During the observations we've created checklists of observed birds for each group and location. The complete lists can be found in the Community tab in our Application.
Cabo de São Vicente (The Cape of Saint Vincent) is one of the principals spots to observe seabirds. This fantastic spot is the southwestern edge of Algarve a perfect spot to observe migratory sea birds. We were there with Thijs, who was effortlessly spotting the seabirds like Balearic Shearwater, Cory's Shearwater, Northern Gannet, Europeans Shag or Yellow-legged Gull, among others.
Other hotspot to observe birds we can find on top of Monte da Cabranosa. There we did few activities both guides and we spotted many birds of prey like Sparrowhawk, Marsh-harrier, Booted Eagle, Kestrel, Lesser spotted eagle and Peregrine Falcon.
In Ponta de Atalaia, a location near Praia de Mareta and Praia de Martinhal, we were enjoying the fantastic views from the cliffs every day with Guillaume. With his guided groups we observed several beautiful birds like Egyptian Vulture, Greater Whitethroat, Stonechat, Redstarts, Northern Wheatears, Whinchat, Willow Warblers, Sardinian Warblers, Yellow Wagtail, among others.
At this point we would like to thank Thijs and Guillaume for their help and patience supporting us, to show and test our platform to their group of birdwatchers. We've learned a lot from them and their work during guiding events.
Moreover, we would like to thank to all participants who gave us the valuable feedback. We are already working on applying the changes and improving your birdwatching experience! All our observations and checklists from Sagres Festival can be found in our application - Followbirds.
Thank you to be part of the Followbirds story and we hope to see you in Sagres next year!
